Sintra is perched on a mountain range that rises west of Lisbon, standing majestically as an outpost of the Atlantic ocean. The high elevation creates a micro-climate, supporting a vast pine forest and fertile soils. It become the first centre of European Romantic architecture in the 19th century, displaying Gothic, Egyptian, Moorish and Renaissance elements, surrounded by parks that blend local and exotic species of trees.

The town itself is only a short drive to the beaches, where you find picturesque villages, surfing beaches, secluded coves and a variety of life, entertainment and activities.
A longtime royal sanctuary, Sintra’s forested terrain is dotted with an array of eloquent villas and palaces. The famous Quinta da Regaleira is only a short 1km walk away from Casinha das Vinhas. The Moorish- and Manueline-style Sintra National Palace is located right in the centre of the old town and is distinguished by dramatic twin chimneys and elaborate tilework. The hilltop 19th-century Pena National Palace is known for a whimsical design and sweeping views, preceeded on the hilltop by the 10th century Moorish Castle, which can be viewed from our bedroom balcony.
