Flights
From Outside Portugal: Several international Airlines (TAP Air Portugal, Tui, Ryanair, Easyjet, SATA, Delta, Norwegian) offer direct flights from the US and Europe to São Miguel Island. A local flight service, operated by Azores Airlines (part of the SATA Group), connects this island with daily flights to Horta Airport (HOR).
From Inside Portugal: SATA or TAP Air Portugal connect the islands to and from the mainland cities of Lisbon, Porto, Faro and the island of Madeira. There are direct flights from Lisbon to Horta, however all other locations will require a transfer at either São Miguel or Terceira.
Ferry Service
In the summer, ferries connect Faial with the islands of the Eastern and Western Groups. There are also seasonal services to Graciosa and Terceira (via São Jorge). Throughout the year, ferries service connections between the triangle islands of Faial, Pico and São Jorge. The timetable for these ferries can be found on the following website.
Rental Cars
We are regularly asked if it’s necessary to hire a car. The answer is no, but it depends on your own taste and budget. The house is perfectly placed near the beach, volcanic rock pools and all the amenities of Horta, so you are able to walk most places.
For activities and sight seeing further afield, you can either rent a car for more liberty and freedom or use shuttle services, taxis and tours from the different operators. Please see the Activities page for more information.
If renting a car, we recommend Auto Tourística Faialense, who have offices at the airport, downtown Horta and at the ferry terminal, making pick up and drop offs simple and easy. Other rental car operators include Ihla Verde, Frijoc and Horta Rent.
Please note that rental cars get booked up very quickly during high season, so please make your reservation early!
