Flores Island

Flores Island (Ilha das Flores) is an island of the Western Group (Grupo Ocidental) of the Azores lying on the North American plate, known for its abundance of flowers hence its Portuguese name of Flores.

On May 27, 2009, Flores was chosen as one of the several areas to be included on UNESCOs list of World Network of Biosphere Reserves. It is often referred to the “New Zealand of Europe” or the “Hawaii of the Atlantic” but we assure you the island has enough wonder and charm to hold its own against this other areas of natural beauty.

Flores is the ideal place for all adventurers who like to explore unspoiled nature, featuring deep mystic lakes, desert-like mountains, black stone beaches, hot springs and unique flora and fauna. You can lose yourself in its beauty and then find yourself once more in its stunning seaside towns.

Casa Via d’Agua is in one of those seaside towns called Faja Grande. This sits on the edge of the forest park of Fazenda which has a microclimate that allows for a great development numerous exotic plant species from all over the world. Flores island has a humid subtropical climate largely influenced by the Gulf Stream and the surrounding Atlantic Ocean creating a mild temperature range averaging 13.6°C (56.5°F) in winter to 25.3°C (77.5°F) in summer. Throughout the year temperatures rarely exceed 30°C (86°F) or drop below 6°C (41°F).
